Round One Wrap

By Matt Vernal

It was great to finally get the tennis season underway, and see the kids out on the court. Our eight teams had a mixture of fortunes over the weekend.

A Special- Our Buckley Park/Gladstone Park team had a good win first up over Princes Hill/OLN.

A Grade 2- Our Tullamarine/Gladstone Park outfit had a hard fought win over St Monicas. Nicole showed great determination in the wind eventually going down 7-8 in an epic 2 hour set.

A Grade 2 Boys- Our A Grade Boys had a tough night in the wind but fought the night out bravely, going down in the tiebreak in both doubles sets.

B Grade 1 Boys- The newly formed Gladstone Park/Moomba Park combination got off to a great start winning 35-17. Daniel led the way with a solid win in his singles before winning 6-1 with Alvey in the doubles.

C Special 1- Having gone up a few grades as a result of their Runners Up pennant, the team had a bit of a tough morning. However Joelle was able to turn the tables in her singles to come out with a comfortable 6-1 victory.

C Grade 3 – Another team who have jumped up a few grades. Despite going down, they competed well and should continue to improve. George provided the highlight of the morning with a hard fought 6-5 win in his singles.

D Special 2 – Probably the best performance of the round this team consisted of three members who had never played competition tennis before. Despite this they managed to pull off a stunning victory 34 – 27. As the experienced member of the team, Ghazal led the way winning all three of her sets.

D Grade 3- This team had to call in a couple of emergencies with one very late call up. They did well to take a couple of sets through the morning. Young Khai was the standout being involved in both the winning sets.

This season there will be an award given to a player each week who has competed hard and shown determination in proudly representing the Gladstone Park Tennis Club. It will be called the Development Award which is sponsored by Gladstone Park Plumbing. This award is a 30 minute private lesson with Gabriel.
